Core Plus Maritime is a K12 program-of-study with industry created resources and support. Program resources (except state funding) are provided by the staff of the Manufacturing Industrial Council.
  • KEY PROGRAM ELEMENTS
    • Free curriculum for K12 educators with state-approved frameworks for 3rd year Math, Science, ELA credit equivalencies.
    • Students certificates
    • Professional development
    • Employer engagement with students and educators
    • State funding for classroom materials, equipment, teacher training, travel, and services.
  • CLASSROOM FUNDING

Qualifying public schools and instructors can access state funding for classroom materials and equipment, professional development, travel and professional services.  This funding goes through OSPI, Core Plus Maritime’s application is FP 920.  These applications are reviewed by industry partners to ensure purchases align to maritime needs.

Since CPMaritime classroom funding became available in Fall 2019, $2.4mil has gone to 31 schools for marine technology implementation.

  • CAREER PREP & EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT

We bring employer values to K12 classrooms. Over 150 companies have engaged with our program through event participation, classroom speaking, hiring, curriculum & certificate review, and sponsorships.

Core Plus Maritime hosts events open to all our educational partners throughout the year. Go here for events.

  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Virtual and In-Person professional development opportunities will be offered as needed or desired by instructors.

Maritime Instructors receive ongoing training opportunities so instructors are comfortable delivering  classroom content and technical skills.  In the 2024 – 2025 school year, the MIC provided 115 clock hours.

  • FRAMEWORKS

Our frameworks were designed to offer marine technology through a variety of skilled pathways.  Our frameworks work best with CIP Code 470616, but made to work with all the following:

    470000 Manufacturing Foundations

    480000 Precision Production Trades Foundations

    460290 Marine Carpentry/Boat Building

    470605 Diesel Mechanic and Repair

    470616 Marine Maintenance & Ship Repair Technology/Technician

    480503 Machine Shop Technology/Technician

    480508 Welding Technology

State-approved 540 hour Frameworks with Credit Equivalencies

Core Plus Maritime’s 540 hour framework was approved by OSPI for 3rd year Math, Science and ELA credit equivalencies in March 2021.  This 540 hour framework easily fits a Skill Center program with focuses on Welding, Diesel Mechanics, Marine Maintenance & Ship Repair, Marine Carpentry/Boat Building.

    180 hour Frameworks:  Recommended Sequence

The 540-hour state approved framework was broken down into a recommended series of 180 hour frameworks to be used in comprehensive high schools.  These recommended frameworks can help high schools offer a sequence of courses.  They are easily adaptable to fit program needs.

“Where’s Transportation?”  Not to worry!  HB 2236 allows us to start developing Marine Transportation frameworks and CIP codes.

  • CURRICULUM

Our Marine Technology curriculum uses boats to teach highly transferable, foundational skills that prepare students for all kinds of industrial careers and interests.

Curriculum includes frameworks, classroom activities, lesson plans, project and lab suggestions, PowerPoints (for teacher reference, not students), evaluations, and stackable student certificates.  Resources and content are provided for topics not included in units, in the case someone wants to explore a topic further.

Core Plus Maritime curriculum was developed by industry and donated to the state.  This curriculum is FREE for public school instructors.  The MIC manages the curriculum platform and access, reach out to Becklynn for access or to schedule a review.

  • CERTIFICATES

Students can earn at least 3 CPMaritime certificates; these are considered IRCs by OSPI.  Students also obtain a WA State Boaters Safety Card and other certificates offered in individual programs.

Certificates represent the competencies being learned by students.  Certificates set standards and expectations of what students will be learning.  Certificates are beneficial for their own personal growth as well as real-word professionalism.

Core Plus Maritime Foundational Certificate (reflects 180 hours): Emphasizes personal skills needed to get an entry-level job; Basic safety skills needed in a shop, ship yard or boat; Standard Operation procedures and proper tool use.  Awarded after 1st year in program.

Core Plus Maritime Certificate (reflects 360-540 hours):  Emphasizes professionalism, communication and career readiness skills needed to get into a job or training program; experience with power tools and equipment; understanding of basic electricity and trouble shooting; 1st Aid & CPR training; maritime safety practices like properly identifying and extinguishing fires.

Washington Boater’s Safety Card:   Students will better understand real world applications of operating boats.  Students learn boat safety and terminology, Rules of the Road, and so much more.
